Spinal Cord Stimulation:

Neuromodulation for Functional Restoration

Goodlife clinic exterior

What is Spinal Cord Stimulation (SCS)?

Spinal Cord Stimulation is an advanced, FDA-approved clinical intervention used to manage chronic, refractory pain that has not responded to traditional conservative or surgical treatments. Often described as a "pacemaker for pain," SCS utilizes a small implanted device that delivers mild electrical pulses to the spinal cord.

These pulses interfere with the transmission of pain signals as they travel toward the brain, replacing the sensation of sharp or chronic pain with a more neutral, soothing sensation (or, with modern "burst" and high-frequency technology, no sensation at all). Unlike permanent surgical procedures that involve altering the anatomy of the spine, SCS is a reversible "neuromodulation" therapy that changes how your nervous system processes pain without damaging the spinal structures.

The Goodlife Approach: Quieting the System to Facilitate a Cure

In our mission to push closer toward a CURE, we do not view Spinal Cord Stimulation as a final destination, but as a powerful neurological "reset."

Chronic pain often puts the body into a state of permanent "high alert," where the nervous system itself becomes hypersensitive. This neurological noise can act as a barrier, preventing patients from participating in the very physical therapies and chiropractic care needed to address their structural imbalances. By using SCS to "quiet" these overactive pain signals, we provide you with the functional window necessary to engage in active rehabilitation. Our goal is to use neuromodulation to restore your ability to move, work, and exercise, ultimately allowing your body to reach a state of lasting, self-sustaining health.

The Clinical Trial: Testing for Success

One of the most significant advantages of Spinal Cord Stimulation is the Trial Phase. Before any permanent device is implanted, we perform a temporary "test drive" (usually 5–7 days). During this period:
  • Thin, flexible leads are placed near the spinal cord using a needle-based procedure similar to an epidural.
  • You wear an external controller that allows you to experience the pain relief in your own daily environment.
  • We measure your improvement in sleep, mobility, and pain reduction.
  • If the trial successfully achieves a 50% or greater reduction in pain and a significant increase in function, we move forward with the permanent implantation.

Right for You?

Spinal Cord Stimulation may be a necessary component of your multidisciplinary treatment plan if you experience:

  • Failed Back Surgery Syndrome (FBSS): Persistent pain following one or more spinal surgeries.
  • Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS): A chronic pain condition often affecting a limb.
  • Chronic Radiculopathy: Radiating pain (sciatica) that has not responded to injections or decompression.
  • Arachnoiditis: Inflammation of the protective membranes of the spinal cord.
  • Refractory Peripheral Neuropathy: Chronic nerve pain in the hands or feet.

Potential Benefits

  • Targeted Neurological Control: Specifically addresses the "misfiring" pain signals associated with chronic nerve damage.
  • Significant Functional Gains: Restores the ability to stand, walk, and participate in physical rehabilitation.
  • Reduced Medication Dependency: Can significantly decrease or eliminate the need for systemic opioids and other pain medications.
  • Reversible and Adjustable: The system can be programmed to match your activity levels and can be removed if your underlying condition resolves.

Disclaimers: Individual results may vary. Spinal Cord Stimulation is a medical procedure involving a trial phase and a permanent surgical implantation, administered by a licensed physician as part of a comprehensive care plan. No warranties or guarantees are made regarding a total "cure." The clinical necessity of SCS is determined by a thorough evaluation, psychological screening, and a successful trial phase. Insurance coverage is subject to your carrier's specific "medical necessity" criteria and prior authorization protocols.
